Legalizing Marijuana

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFmtirw5io8

I am sure that it is safe to say that those of us blogging here would agree that drugs are bad, and marijuana is no excpetion to this concensus. However, I am going to have to argue for legalizing marijuana.
Some of the reasons I support this include:
1. In 2007, 782,000 people were arrested and at least 60,000 of these people are now serving time in jail or prison. There are much more important crimes in America that need taking care of. There are murder cases that not only take years to solve, but decades. Our legal system could be focused on much more important problems.

2. Legalizing marijuana could benefit the economy, and we all know it is in desperate need of that.

3. Many forget that marijuana has medicinal properties, serving as a pain reliever. We were not provided anything on this earth that does not have a use and purpose. It is how we use what we were given that determines if it is okay.

4. By continuing to allow the use of marijuana to be illegal, we support the drug cartels and criminal drug mafias.

  1. I am very interested in your thoughts. I think you have good insights about jail time and bigger, worse crimes than smuggling. Your claim has interested me in pursuing my opinion about the matter further. Thank you!

  2. Yes legalizing marijuana might help the economy out a little bit but then we would have alot more people getting high and ruining their lives. The fact that it is illegal now is a big factor in why some kids are not doing it. They are afraid of getting a run in with the law, so they stay away. If you legalize it then you will have a lot more messed up kids.
Also if you use your logic then are you saying it would be better to legalize all other kinds of drugs too? Because technically we would be helping the economy just a little and would not be helping the drug dealers. But if you do this I believe it will only make our society worse.

  3. where do we draw the line between what we know is wrong and what may benefit the country? For instance we know abortion and homosexuality is wrong, but should we still allow it to be legal? It's difficult to know where to draw the line when it comes to our morals and government laws.

  4. How is the legalization of marijuana any different from how legal it is to consume alcohol?

Tannen, if you are telling me that there will be a significant increase in marijuana users if it becomes legal, you are mistaken. The people who want to smoke the cannabis will smoke it regardless. Do you think people were afraid to consume alcohol during prohibition? No, people drank and partied it up anyway.

I am personally okay with the legalization of marijuana. There would obviously be many restrictions on it anyway. Where and when (in terms of age) you can use it.

  5. So Josh are you saying that even if the increase is not significant but say only .1% does that make it any more right? That is still more peoples lives messed up. My other question was not answered though, if we are going to legalize marijuana then why not all the other drugs also. If we go off of what the post said, then legalizing drugs is better for the economy and it hurts the drug dealers. Does that still make it ok? I would say no.

  6. Josh this may be for my own selfish reasons, but I have to smell enough nasty smells from alcohol and tobacco. Why would I want to add another disgusting smell to that? And it's not our problem to try and get rid of drug dealers. They made the choice and will deal with the consequences.

  7. tannen, i do not know if you remember this or not, but the beginning of my post did say that drugs are bad. but i do not believe that marijuana's legal status is going to significantly alter the number of marijuana users in this country. maybe it is not okay, but why not take something good from the bad?
