Claims

This commercial is making the claim that if a child were to see David Beckham in the locker room, he would act nonchalant and just stand there even though an all-star athlete was a few feet away from him. That kid would not be allowed to be in the locker room anyway, they have extremely high security there, it's not possible that he would just be standing there watching the game. Also, I don't think David Beckham would be asking for Pepsi in the middle of his game.

Male BYU students shouldn't be required to shave their faces. I believe that it is their choice, and that it doesn't interfere with the learning environment or our standards as church members. True, it is frowned upon in the church, but no one has ever been excommunicated for having facial hair. So why is it that a guy can't even play intramural sports if he has facial hair?

  1. No one has ever been ex-communicated for not going to church either, but we still have to do it. The facial hair rule is in place because it takes all of the guesswork out of "extreme". You aren't allowed to have facial hair on your mission, or if you are a member of the Bishopric either.

  2. I wish I could grow some facial hair here sometimes. I don't see how it is "disrespectful" or "bad". Sure, it would get kind of out of hand if one was to grow a giant beard. But didn't Jesus have facial hair?

  3. Scott, I think back in the day it was a sin not to have a nice beard. But in all seriousness we all agreed to come to BYU on the premise that we would all learn in an environment that is in harmony with the church. This is the Lord's college after all. Being clean shaven creates the image of a clean cut, and pure individual. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Also I can't really grow facial hair so I have no problem with people not being able to show off their scruff.

  4. I think that the rule is a bit restrictive. I agree that it doesn't make sense that guys can go to the temple with facial hair, you actually can have a beard and be in the bishopric, it is just recomended that you not. So why no let them be allowed to have facial hair.
