rhetorical analysis draft

In today's society, the definition of beauty has morphed into something much more shallow than it used to be. Dove is attempting to redefine beauty with their Campaign For Real Beauty. Dove is trying to make a difference in the lives of women while advertising their products at the same time. The site utilizes images, articles, and other resources. The site portrays what are generally considered as average, or even less than that, as beautiful.

Dove's target audience is women worldwide. The home page of the website lets the user choose their country of origin. Not only does the site offer a specialized option of a country, but where needed it offers different language options to better relate to the users. The site offers a wide range of choices. These choices include the United States, Arabia, Argentina, Belgium (French), Belgium (Flemish), Brazil, Canada (English), Canada (French), Central America, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (German), Switzerland (French), Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Vietnam.

The website is very pathos-oriented. With the images the site portrays and the stories from other other women, the site provokes the emotions of its target audience. Not every, actually, very few, women are that air-brushed covergirl, the runway model, or the glamorous movie-star. Seeing other women much like themselves, hearing what they have to say, and seeing their self-confidence helps Dove accomplish their goal.

The images that are on the website are a very powerful tool that Dove employs. They provoke the most emotion in such a short amount of time. Many women have self-esteem issues. To see a woman who might not be gorgeous or have an amazing body showing off her confidence shows that anyone can be comfortable with who they are.

I really liked your opening sentence and I also liked your attention to how the website targets woman worldwide (by selecting the country from your from)

I would only suggest making your list of countries smaller...perhaps one from each continent or area of the world. And what does choosing the country provide for the reader? Something can be addressed worldwide, but having the added technique of choosing the country must have reasoning behind it. (I don't know if that sentence makes sense...)

And I skimmed a little with length too...so that's more of an obvious one. It needs to be longer.

Interesting analysis and I think I'm going to go look on the website now. tata

  2. I think the picture at the beginning really grabs the attention of the reader so they will want to keep reading your analysis. You made some good points in there, especially with the pathos tool. My only suggestion is to make the analysis longer; try covering more rhetorical tools that the author uses and use more of your own commentary. Good job though!
