BYU ISSUes

1.Every Year at the same time the BYU Bookstore becomes the center of chaos. At the beginning of the year all the students come in to either buy the books they have procrastinated on buying or to return the books of a class that has been dropped. There are also long lines that take you hours to get through. I think that the books store should hire temporary employees during the first two weeks of school to help keep the lines down.

2. The BYUSA is putting together a student group to remodel the Wilkinson Center in order to making it appear more student friendly. The University has given them basically free rein within reason to make it more appealing to the students. This group is looking for suggestions fromo the students, since this building will be for the students. Does anyone have any good ideas about improving the Wilkinson Center?

3. I think that BYU is pushing the H1N1 virus a little too hard. We all know it is out there. There is no need to scare everyone on campus.

my issues

1. Is there some sort of competition to see how scandalous a girl can dress without getting “caught?” Where’s the integrity when it comes to the honor code? Are we at a fashion show or a "mormon" university?
2. Choose to learn about the world. There are so many opportunities, yet we don’t take them. We just want the easy way out by staying in the “bubble.”
3. The stereotype of “Utah Mormon…” What does that mean anyway? We’re all peculiar, regardless of where we live. And we all decided to come to Brigham Young University right?
4. You would think with all the automatic water and soap dispensers on campus we would have toilet seat covers.
5. Parking. Need I say more? Solution: get your motorcycle license or don’t complain, unless you want 6 story parking garages everywhere.

Community issuse at BYU

1. The drivers around BYU are literally killing me. As a pedestrian, you expect a car to stop or at least slow down if you are in the crosswalk. Rather, it seems that some drivers around BYU see pedestrians as objects to avoid as they zoom past you, only to be stopped by the next red light. Not only is this practice unsafe, but totally trashes common coutesy.

2. For the students that live on campus, have no car, and cook their own food. I feel sorry for you. Yesterday, I went to the Creamery to buy some milk. Only to find that 1/2 a gallon, half, was 1.49. After I purchased it, feeling good about myself for buying some milk, I saw an ad for a local supermarket where a full gallon of milk was only 1.99. These inflated prices and the lack of nearby grocery stores is hurting the pocketbook of BYU students.

3. The lack of pranks at Heleman halls. C'mon guys, let's see them.

4. The most important. There are no ping pong tables at any of the Heleman Halls. People want to play ping pong. Then there are those who want to paly table tennis. Though, to begin, the reason why there are no ping pong tables it because, as my RA said, is because there have been instnaces where past residents have toally trashed the ping pong tables. Like, sitting on them, cracking the paddels, and yes, taking bats to them. I agree that these residents, especially those who have taken bats to the ping pong tables, should lose their privalages, but should we in the present be punished for the actions if those in the past.

BYU issues

• In my perspective the "Freshman 15" is an issue in our BYU commuinty. People think that if they buy cheap unhelathy food that it will help them financially, when in all reality they are starting habits that can harm your helath.
• As BYU student's we are affected by the current recession that the nation is dealing with. There is less job opportunities for us, and when time comes to buy textbooks and pay for bills we are in even a tighter budget. Somehow we still have to manage to pay for everything else.
• Yesterday I heard a fustrated BYU student mentioning that he had to return almost all of his textbooks because the bookstore had ordered them incorrectly. Personally, an issue with the bookstore that I have is that it can't order the correct amount of textbooks. How can it be 600 textbooks short for English?
• An issue that I often hear about at BYU is that there isn't enough parking!

Community Issues at BYU

1. One thing my sophomore room mates were talking about was how they wish there was more parking. They all agreed that the parking situation was particularly frustrating during the winter, when it is troublesome to walk in the snow. Some of the comments were concerning the incredibly small ratio of parking spots to students.
2. One perspective that I would like to change about BYU is that Provo is home to all the jack Mormons. I have always heard slants on the big city and how kids want to go to Provo because there is less oversight and ruling. When I think that Provo has a lot to offer and non of our acceptances were based on the opportunity to rebel.
3. Along with the parking situation, I have heard rumors that there are not enough bike racks. Some opinions is that BYU administration should spend less on sports programs and more on facilities (preferably bike racks) that are for the majority of the student population.
4. The cougar eat is too expensive and some complaints have been made that their are no healthy choices.
   

Issues in the BYU community

• Visiting hours in the dorm, if we are allowed to have them, why do they restrict it for two days only? The doors are wide open!
• The gym, apparently, we need new workout equipment, most of the equipment is either old or broken.
  
• Time between schedules, 10 minutes?!? Is not enough time to walk into your next classroom and actually find a good seat.
• MyMap can be quite difficult to figure out, especially if its your first time using it.
  

I have issues...

These are just a couple issues I thought would be interesting to talk/write about.

1. "Hey I know we just met this semester, but would you like to spend the rest of eternity with me?" Some people move way too fast. How about getting to know someone before you propose? Just a suggestion.

2. The "RM label" doesn't stick to everyone. Some steryotypes given to RM's just don't fit the majority.

3. Coed camping: is it okay?

4. Talking while the professor is trying to teach, why is that so hard to stop doing for some people?

Where does all of the time go....

Okay people here are some issues I have found around campus both in living on campus for 2 years, and a year living off campus....it could be more, but who wants to think about it that much?

1. I know we have lots of Honor code meetings, but I wonder if anyone remembers that visiting hours and rules apply to off campus not just on campus housing? Do you think the hours are fair on those that are living off campus?

2. Pedestrians, I know at one point or another we are all one....but how are we NOT supposed to hit them if they don't obey the cross walk laws? Whose fault is it really?

3. Why is there such a mad dash to get into off campus housing, when at most colleges people stay in dorms all four years they are in college?

4. For those of you that have experienced the application process for financial aid and scholarships, you might know the stresses of waiting for that check to get here in order to pay for tuition...How can we get the University to help get our money here a little bit faster to avoid the panic of deadlines, and the need for books?

5. How is it that professors in completely different departments still find a way to plan there tests in the exact same week as all of your other classes?

Potential op ed topics

• Why can't you transfer some leftover dining dollars to your signature card... why not even something like $10 a week so that you can print or do laundry or make small purchases at the bookstore?
• Dear Cougareat food court, why do you close so early?
• Shopping for textbooks: the upstairs textbook store was all out of a book that my suitemate needed for her class, but then she went downstairs to the regular bookstore and found it in stock--- lack of communication between the upstairs and the downstairs?
• Wireless internet for the dorms please!

Things I'd Write About

1. The posters in the Periodicals section of the library. I understand that the library has to put the books away, but do they really need to put up pictures of somewhat-subservient-looking 1950s women in order to accomplish that?
2. Short shorts are just too short for the Honor Code.
3. The burial of the BYU arts performance page among subpages on the BYU website.
4. To students: don't expect your instructor to be there in their office, waiting to talk to you, at any hour of the day. Go to their office hours or set up an appointment.
